The Boot

"Crap! Is it 2?"

Poppe had just woken up too.  We had both passed out on her couches after a grueling 15 minutes of homework (aren't you proud mom... I did my homework!).

"It's 2:15.  You're fine.  You can be parked there until 2, and yesterday I left for work around 4 and the tow truck had just arrived."

Phewsh. I quickly threw my books in my bag, laced up my converse, and was out the door in no time.  My heart sunk, however, as I noticed a car blocking mine, its lights blaring.  As I got closer I could see a man shining his flashlight into front windshield.  Wait... Is it a cop? I was expecting a tow truck. What is he doing? HEY I DON'T HAVE DRUGS IN THERE.  I live a life in accordance with the BYU Honor Code, I promise.  I rushed across the parking lot and rounded the corner to the driver's side.

And there it was... the boot.  Not quite as menacing as I'd pictured, but definitely as annoying.

The man looked at me and I managed to croak, "I fell asleep."  He looked irritated. "Is it too late?"

"Kind-of." Pause. "But I haven't finished the paperwork." He was obviously peeved, and I couldn't tell if it was because he enjoyed booting cars and I had interrupted him, or if it was because it took forever to get the boot on and off.  Definitely not the latter because within a matter of seconds he'd unlocked the boot and was driving away.

As I awkwardly followed him out of the parking lot I wondered if that little contraption was as easy to break as it looked.  Would it really stop me from driving away or would my tire snap it in half?

I should have hugged him...

A hug might've pissed him off more, but I decided I should have given him one.  The man had just granted me a Halloween miracle.  However, I'm still intrigued by the personality type that gets annoyed because he couldn't boot my car.  I would have high-fived myself for getting there in the nick of time.  This is why I've crossed off "Booter" from my list of future employment ideas (don't worry... it wasn't actually on the list in the first place). I digress. Happy Halloween everyone.  May your day be boot free, just like mine.
